Justice Kennedy’s Retirement Not Imminent, Says Grassley

Sen Chuck Grassley, Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, says his expectations of another vacancy on the Supreme Court this year have fizzled. There had been widespread speculation that Justice Anthony Kennedy would retire. He recently turned 81. Kennedy is a swing vote on the Court as presently constituted after the Republican-led Senate refused to consider then-President Barack Obama’s nomination of federal judge Merrick Garland to fill the vacancy created by Antonin Scalia’s death. Garland would have tipped the court in a liberal direction. Anyone whom President Trump nominates is likely to tip it further right.
