Labor Pick Scalia Has Brand Recognition, Anti-Reg Creds

So confident is President Trump in the loyalty of his blue collar supporters that he has chosen Eugene Scalia to be his new Labor Secretary, despite Scalia’s anti-worker and anti-union record. A partner in the Washington office of the Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, Scalia has a long record of challenging Labor Department and other federal regulations, as well as a famous last name. His predecessor Alexander Acosta came across as somewhat sympathetic to the concerns of working people, but Acosta’s highly-publicized sympathy for Jeffrey Epstein, alleged sexual abuser of underage girls, brought him down. If confirmed, Scalia joins an administration that has moved aggressively to reverse regulations. He helped undo an Obama-era rule to put stricter requirements on professionals who advise retirement savers on investments, defended Boeing from a labor union lawsuit and fought on behalf of Wal-Mart against a Maryland law aimed at improving workers’ health care. He served for a year as the Labor Department’s solicitor, during the George W. Bush administration.
