Lawyer Jailed For Black Lives Matter Pin

An Ohio lawyer was convicted of contempt, placed in handcuffs, and sentenced to five days in jail for refusing to remove a Black Lives Matter pin. Andrea Burton was jailed for five hours before being released, and is appealing the conviction, claiming it infringed on her right to free speech. “A judge doesn’t support either side,” said Judge Robert Milich. “A judge is objective and tries to make sure everyone has an opportunity to have a fair hearing, and it was a situation where it was just in violation of the law.” Burton told the Washington Post, “I’m not anti-police. I hold them in the highest regard, and I do believe all lives matter.” Burton, who was raised in Youngstown, said she wanted to voice her opinion about the killings of blacks by police officers.
