Lawyer Who Dissed Client Online Suspended

When former clients took to the Internet to complain about a Colorado lawyer’s competency and fees, the lawyer fired back, posting confidential information gleaned from attorney-client discussions meant to publicly shame them, and then suing for defamation. He has since signed an admission of misconduct, and will have his license suspended for 18 months. “This is yet another cautionary tale for lawyers practicing in the digital age,” lawyer Joseph A. Corsmeier writes on the Lawyer Ethics Alert blog. “A client’s criticism of the lawyer on internet websites is certainly not [an exception to the confidentiality rule], and revealing confidential information in response to criticism on those platforms is a violation of Bar rules.”
