Lawyer Who Nailed Trans Fats Now Targeting Devices That Distract Drivers

A lawyer who propelled the movement against trans fats with a lawsuit more than 10 years ago now has his sights on another target: the companies that make devices “used in the deadly habit of distracted driving,” reports the New York Times. When he filed a lawsuit against Kraft Foods for marketing Oreos to children, attorney Stephen L. Joseph took a lot of criticism, but the cause has been widely recognized as valid, and last month the food industry was put on notice it had to phase out trans fats by 2018. Now the Los Angeles lawyer has mounted a lawsuit against Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung, alleging their smartphones and smart watches encourage people to focus on them instead of the potentially deadline machine they are supposed to be driving. He’s relying on a “public nuisance” theory to make his case.
