Loophole For Chinese Prisoners: Patents

A Chinese rule that reduces prisoner sentences for “important technical innovations” has led to a black market of prisoners paying small firms to patent technologies under their names, a Beijing Youth Daily investigation discovered. Prisoners can effectively pay down chunks of their sentence by forking over from $1,000 to $10,000 for patents on everything from cigarette holders to geothermal energy innovations. The benefit to prisoners is just one of many perks that China has offered domestic inventors, which have led to skyrocketing applications for new patents.
