Ronald Sullivan, Harvard Law Professor, former faculty dean and ex-attorney for Harvey Weinstein, didn’t file income tax returns from 2005 through 2013 and failed to pay more than $1 million in taxes, according to a United States Tax Court opinion issued in November. The USTC judge issued a summary judgement after Sullivan failed to respond to multiple requests to provide evidence that the IRS incorrectly assessed his assets in determining his tax bill. Sullivan was in the news earlier this year when student protests erupted after he decided to represent Harvey Weinstein in his criminal case while simultaneously serving as faculty dean of Winthrop House at Harvard. He was relieved of that position after a semester of student outcry. In November Sullivan spoke at an event held by the Harvard Undergraduate Constitutional Law Society, and made caustic comments about the deans who dismissed him. The Harvard Crimson was critical of both sides of that controversy; of Sullivan for his remarks, and of those who said he never should have been invited to speak. The paper pointed out that Sullivan is a well-respected scholar within his field; that he is the faculty director of the Harvard Criminal Justice Institute, and has reportedly won the release of more wrongfully incarcerated persons than anyone else in U.S. history.
