Muhammad Ali Enterprises Sues Fox

Frederick Sperling, the Chicago attorney who won a jury verdict of $9 million against the (defunct) Dominick’s supermarket chain for unauthorized use of Michael Jordan’s likeness, is representing Muhammad Ali Enterprises in a $30 million suit against Fox Broadcasting. It claims Fox used Ali’s identity in a promotional video for Super Bowl 51 without permission, and that Fox violated the Illinois Right of Publicity Act. In addition to the $30 million in damages, it seeks an injunction requiring Fox to refrain from any use of Ali’s identity without prior authorization and an order to delete all copies of the video from any website. “Fox obtained great value by using Muhammad Ali to promote itself,” said Sperling. “It should pay for what it took.”
