'New Law' Lures Overworked Lawyers

BigLaw’s long hours and poor work-life balance have led to a growing trend in legal services called ‘New Law.’ It consists of a group of entrepreneurial businesses that poach exhausted attorneys, offering them a more humane way to work. According to a new study by the Center for Worklife Law, dozens of such businesses are siphoning top talent, among them Axion, now one of the largest providers of legal services in the country. “While the … revenue that is actually being siphoned off by these non-traditional service providers still seems modest compared to the overall size of the legal market,” legal commenter James Jones said, “they’re growing every single year.” The most common reason given by BigLaw defectors – desire for a better work-life balance.
