Accused serial rapist Harvey Weinstein’s lead attorney, Benjamin Brafman, has resigned. Brafman led the charge to get sexual assault charges against Weinstein dropped, stating that his client “did not invent the casting couch,” and calling the indictments against him deeply flawed. One count was dropped, but others remain. The new four-person legal team consists of Jose Baez, Ronald Sullivan, Duncan Levin and Pamela Robillard Mackey, who successfully defended Kobe Bryant against rape charges in 2003. Baez is known for his representation of Casey Anthony, a Florida mother who was found not guilty of murdering her young daughter in a highly-publicized trial in 2011. Baez and Sullivan, a Harvard law professor, successfully defended New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez against murder charges in 2017. Actress Rose McGowan, the first of dozens of women to accuse Weinstein, called out Baez and Sullivan for  “a major conflict of interest” because they defended her in a drug case last year. Weinstein’s next hearing is March 7. His trial could begin as soon as next May.
