New Team For Weinstein, Who Thinks He’s In a Movie
July 19, 2019
A state judge has approved Harvey Weinstein’s request for a new defense team. His former attorneys, Ronald Sullivan and Jose Baez said they are departing because of “public scrutiny” and because they aren’t getting along with Weinstein. According to some reports, Baez claims Weinstein thinks he’s in a movie about an embattled and unjustly accused defendant, which makes him difficult to work with. Weinstein’s new team is headed by Chicago plaintiff’s attorney Donna Rotunno, who began her new duties with a bang by accusing the #MeToo movement of “railroading” her client. Rottuno has made a career of defending men accused of sexual misconduct and worse. She defended former Chicago Bear Shaun Gayle when he was investigated for the murder of his girlfriend. In respect to #MeToo, she says: “I’m not a woman who has ever subscribed to it. I believe women are responsible for the choices that they make.” Rotunno is by all accounts an effective and dogged defense attorney. She claims she can cross-examine subjects with “more venom” because she is a woman. “I have the ability to get away with a lot more in a courtroom cross-examining a female than a male lawyer does. He may be an excellent lawyer, but if he goes at that woman with the same venom that I do, he looks like a bully. If I do it, nobody even bats an eyelash. And it’s been very effective.”
