According to a source who prefers anonymity, the family of notorious drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has decided they’d be throwing good money after bad by funding his defense. The former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel was extradited to the United States in January last year. He faces 17 drugs and weapons-related charges. His family is said to believe that his case is impossible to win, and see no reason to continue to pay expensive fees to his lawyers. Guzman has plenty of cash of his own, somewhere, but due to his record of tunneling out of prisons, he has been kept in a maximum-security facility in New York with no contact with family members and former associates, making it impossible for him to advise them where to source the money needed to pay his lawyers. Guzman had hired two teams to represent him, one headed by by high-profile attorney Jeffrey Lichtman, but Lichtman quit, reportedly over concerns that he would not be paid. Since September another well-known criminal lawyer, Eduardo Balarezo, has been Guzmán’s private counsel and chief defense attorney. On December 24, Balarezo requested that Guzman’s trial be postponed because “the defense team is insufficiently funded” to prepare for it. Guzman’s family reportedly believes their money is better spent protecting the Sinaloa cartel’s current kingpin, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.
