PR Mill Shuts Down When DOJ Loses A Case

Defense attorneys from Miller & Chevalier take issue with the DOJ for the way it publicizes cases at the outset in what amounts to a public accusal, and but then goes silent in cases where the defendant prevails. The co-authors, one a former DC federal prosecutor and the other the current president of Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, make the case that this DOJ practice is unfair and a betrayal of its mission. “How,” they ask, “is the public to assess whether the Department is utilizing its resources wisely when the Department announces charges, convictions, and sentences, yet acts like acquittals never occur?” They call on DOJ to begin issuing press releases announcing the outcome of any case in which it previously issued a press release about the charges.
