Taking a backdoor approach to a looming cybersecurity problem, legislation proposed by a bipartisan group of senators would impose significant obligations on government contractors who supply an “internet-connected device.” An analysis of the Internet of Things (IoT) Cybersecurity Improvement Act of 2017 by Ariel Rabkin, an adjunct scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, is generally positive. The bill “has the right general approach, and most of the details seem well-chosen.” he says. “However, there are a few quirks of drafting that may result in unexpected consequences, and the bill’s scope will be unclear unless these are addressed.”
