“Reckless” Rolling Stone Story Target Of Fraternity Lawsuit

A report released this week found that Rolling Stone’s story, “A Rape on Campus,” released last year and since retracted, was riddled with errors and was a “journalistic failure that was avoidable.” The story detailed an alleged gang rape at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house at the University of Virginia in 2012, but the reporter, Sabrina Rubin Erdely, spoke only with the victim and did not substantiate many crucial details of the account. This week, Phi Kappa Psi announced it would file suit against Rolling Stone, calling the story “reckless,” and a “sad example of a serious decline of journalistic standards.” A fraternity spokesman said the chapter has no plans to pursue charges against “Jackie,” the student who claimed to be the victim.
