Republican Treatment Of SCOTUS Nom May Come Back To Haunt Them

Republican Senators’ unprecedented block of President Obama’s nominee to fill the vacant spot on the U.S. Supreme Court may come back to haunt them in the near term, with Democrats reportedly planning to draw out the confirmation process for President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet. According to Politico, many Democrats cited the delay on Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, to the Court as motivation to make the confirmation process a slog. “Past is present, and what goes around comes around,” Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the incoming ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, told Politico. “Now, those are pretty hackneyed sayings, but those are really true around here.” Reportedly, some appointees – such as Elaine Chao to head the Transportation Department – are likely to see a faster, more traditional process. But nominees to head the Department of Education, Health and Human Services, and Trump’s pick for Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, may be in for lengthy hearings. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), the second-highest-ranking Democrat in the Senate, said: “I’m not into retribution. I really think public service should be more than that. But they’ve set a pretty harsh standard.”
