SCOTUS Appears On Verge Of Ratifying Gay Marriage

With the Supreme Court hearing arguments this week in a same-sex marriage case, “a sense of inevitability is in the air: That a majority is on the verge of declaring gay marriage legal nationwide,” according to Joan Biskupic in a Reuters article. She highlights changes over the last two decades in public attitudes and a trend in court decisions. A 2013 ruling written by Justice Anthony Kennedy invalidated the DOMA law that defined marriage as between one man and one woman, and many lower courts interpreted that ruling as an endorsement of same-sex unions. Now that the Court has taken up a case explicitly questioning the constitutionality of same-sex marriage, and 37 states have permitted the unions, she writes, “it seems unlikely the country’s highest court would reverse course.”
