SCOTUS Extracurriculars Surprisingly Hard To Track

As the Supreme Court’s workload has dropped, the justices have made many more outside appearances. Now a new website, Scotus Map, is attempting to track them, but is finding that task very difficult. Meanwhile, University of California, Irvine law professor Richard L. Hasen has authored a new study on the phenomenon, and found that the number of public appearances by justices from 2005 to 2014 – 880 total – was more than four times the number during the 1960s. Justice Sonia Sotomayor was first in Hasen’s “Celebrity Index,” which takes into account both number of appearances and years on the Court.
