Securing Trade Secrets In The Digital Age

These are the best of times for stealing trade secrets. “A thumb drive or an email may be all it takes to spirit off sensitive information,” Pamela Passman writes in an article for Today’s General Counsel magazine. Passman, formerly a VP and deputy general counsel at Microsoft, is founding president and CEO of the non-profit Center for Responsible Enterprise and Trade (CREATe.org). Her organization has teamed up with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) to produce a report, titled “Economic Impact of Trade Secret Theft: a Framework for Companies to Safeguard Trade Secrets and Mitigate Potential Threats,” which provides a practical framework for assessing a company’s trade secrets and their vulnerability to theft, and then lays out a systematic way of investing in safeguards to help avert it.
