Soaring Executive Pay, Lack of Transparency Dogs CA State Bar

A government audit found that the California State Bar Association lacks transparency in its finances, and spends excessively on executive salaries. California State Auditor Elaine Howle says the state bar’s “financial-related reports lacked transparency and contained errors,” making it difficult to grasp the appropriateness of state bar fees, which fund much of the budget. The report also found that, though the bar knew it lacked the funds to pay people who were scammed by dishonest attorneys, it failed to bridge the gap, causing wait times for payouts to exceed 36 months. The bar’s nonprofit foundation also lacked proper oversight, and spent frivolously. Many of the bar’s executives were paid more than Gov. Jerry Brown’s $180,000, and their benefit packages were more generous than those for comparable state employees.
