Southwest Slammed With $1.6M Fine For Leaving Flyers On Tarmac

The Department of Transportation has fined Southwest Airlines $1.6 million, the largest-ever civil penalty against an airline for violating the rule that puts a limit on the time passengers can be kept in a plane waiting on the tarmac. According to the DOT, the limit was exceeded on more than a dozen Southwest planes in Chicago during a snow storm. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said the number of passengers involved and malfunctions in the crew scheduling system prompted the record fine.
