A video that went viral on Facebook shows police in a small Missouri town raiding a hospital and searching a stage 4 cancer patient’s belonging for marijuana. The patient, Nolan Sousley, told the Bolivar, Missouri newspaper that officers asked to search his belongings. He refused, and a short time later several police officers entered his room to search his bags. The video captures the warning they gave Sousley, who admits to using cannabis oil for medical purposes. “If we find marijuana, we’ll give you a citation,” says the officer. Upon being reminded that medical marijuana will be legal in the state starting this summer, the officer replied: “It’s still illegal.” The hospital gave its consent for the raid, and explained that it is policy to call appropriate law enforcement if any time staff see or reasonably suspect illegal drug use in patient rooms or otherwise on campus.
