Superstar Lawyer’s Reputation Takes a Hit

David Boies is one of the highest-paid attorneys in the country, with an hourly rate of $1,850. His reputation is such that he can pick and choose his clients, and throughout his 50 year career he’s always done so with an eye to how they would add luster to his reputation. Until recently he managed that masterfully, but his representation of Harvey Weinstein, which included a concerted effort to smear Weinstein’s accusers, took a big chunk out of his public profile, and he also served as counsel for fraudster Elizabeth Holmes and her blood testing company Theranos, a Silicon Valley success story that turned out to be based on lies and hype. Boies efforts on Holmes’ behalf include attempts to intimidate whistleblowers that were characterized as “thuggish” in a book that revealed the inner-workings of Theranos. At 77, Boies could easily retire, but he has no plans to do so. In a New York Times profile he tells the interviewer; “People retire so they can do what they love to do. I already love what I do.” He’s working on a constitutional challenge to the Electoral College, and representing a sex-trafficking victim in a suit against the hedge fund manager Jeffrey Epstein.
