The inventor of Shake, an app that walks users through creating a simple legal contract, summed up the turbulent future of the U.S. legal industry when he told The Los Angeles Times: “Legal becomes less of a hurdle when contracts are not long and full of jargon.” That jargon has helped fuel  the $200-billion U.S. legal industry, and apps like Shake and other quickly advancing technologies are cutting in on the margins. Abe Geiger, the Shake inventor, said the app was inspired by law firm inefficiencies, a problem that some law firms themselves are addressing by cutting employees and using technology to increase productivity. Innovations, along with new kinds of business plans, may help employ more recent law school grads by addressing the latent $45 million legal services market for low- to middle-income earners.
