Two Black-Owned LA Law Firms Win Record Verdict

The two law largest black-owned law firms in Los Angeles, typically not on the same side, teamed up in a case involving the fatal police shooting of a woman who was pushing a shopping card and wielding a knife. The two firms, Ivie, McNeill & Wyatt, and The Cochran Firm – widely known for having represented celebrities including O.J. Simpson as well as working with civil rights icons Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson – prevailed and won what was said to be the largest jury verdict ever against the City of Long Beach for a police shooting, and the second largest such verdict in the Central District of California. A jury awarded $9,800,000 to the family of the woman, who was shot seven times by two Long Beach police officers.
